There are many common views on the topic of SEO that are shared by business owners and operators. The problem I see with most is that they know that it is important and would love to be on the top of Google listings, but sadly most are afraid to commit and venture into unknown territory. As I have previously said in my article SEO for your business? , many of you are stuck in your “old school” marketing ways.
The shared common views when developing an SEO strategy, are that most do not understand what’s involved, how it works, and why is it costly. To clear the air, I have decided to share some rudimentary SEO techniques, and knowledge on what it takes to get you to that coveted first page on Google.
Think about it, there are billions of websites on the www ( world wide web). The number is staggering on just how many new web sites are added on a daily basis. By today’s standards, it could be considered business suicide, if you do not have a website that is properly functional and competitive.
If you have an established website or a new website, you will quickly see that yours is just a very small fish in a very big ocean, that is full of bigger fish or predators (your competition). They are probably gobbling up all the customers (your bread and butter)with their own SEO strategies and techniques. As my online marketing mentor puts it, “ if you have a website and you don’t promote it properly, it is as if you are posting your business flyers in the rain forest”.
The name of the game for SEO strategy and technique is, get your website in front of the people who are interested in you or your products or services. Simply put, you want to get a better-qualified customer. What that statement means is, contrary to other marketing methods, like print or direct mail marketing, where your business is seen by the masses and might only be relevant to a small amount, a large part of your marketing dollars are wasted on those who do not care about your business. What if your business is seen over and over again everyday by those who are looking for your business niche? That is what a good SEO strategy is about. Implementing proper SEO techniques will do just that.
I assume we can come to an agreement that this is the 21st century, and the main tool people use to find anything is the search engine. Therefore optimizing your website so that it can be easily found is a good for your online marketing SEO strategy.
This might come as a shock, but SEO is not a mysterious art where online magicians and wizards manipulate Google and poof, your site appears in first place. Google and others such as Bing, Yahoo etc. all have a methodology and algorithm that they use to index and rank sites accordingly. The name of the game is, give the search engine what they want. By doing this you make Google’s job easier and they reward you for this.
Just how does Google rank sites when there are billions on the web?
This is a great question that many don’t know and most have not thought about. Google does not have people that sit in front of computers all day reading websites and ranking them accordingly. I can tell you that even the mighty Google does not have enough employees to do that and imagine what the payroll for that would be! The fact is Google’s web crawlers or spiders are constantly reading every single page of every single website constantly, and this process runs in the background day after day after day.
The mission of Google is to index and rank websites, so that you can get the best and most relevant results for the search terms you give it. Therefore good SEO techniques is to make your website easy for the crawlers to read by inserting relevant keywords in the correct areas so the crawlers know what your website is about.
It’s all a popularity game
It’s not a popularity game where you might get a million site visits a day because you are Lady Gaga or Charlie Sheen at this moment. In that case you do not need SEO. Google does not care how popular you might be at the moment. Popularity is measured by how much your website is seen throughout the entire World Wide Web. Think of it this way. The more your website (or backlinks to your website) are seen throughout the web, the more popular you are, thus Google thinks your site is important and is ranked accordingly. The trick in getting you to be the most popular, is to leave backlinks to your site all over the web.
However, just leaving backlinks anywhere would not do it. Good SEO strategy and technique is to leave backlinks with relevant content at highly ranked sites such as directories, submission sites, social media outlets etc. The more popular the site where you leave the backlink, increases the perception of your popularity in the eyes of Google’s crawlers.
Google likes content!
As Google’s crawlers read the web, sites that stand out are the ones that consistently have new content. Sites that are constantly updating or changing content, must be important or have something interesting going on. This is the perception that is sent out to Google’s crawlers as they read the web. You see, even if this is not true, what is more important, is the perception of what you are sending out to Google’s web crawlers. If your website is stagnant every time the crawler visits and it’s the same old stuff…ho hum boring, you will be ranked accordingly. Google’s crawlers remember the state of your website the last time it was crawled.
So what is the easiest way to create new content on the fly?
Good SEO strategy for your website is adding a blog, which is a great SEO technique. When tackling content creation, always remember the blog, because Google’s crawlers love blogs. Never forget that! Blogs that are consistently updated with new content, means that you are part of the online community and a positive contributor to new content that is published throughout the web. If your blog is properly promoted and people are reading and commenting on posts, that is even better. Comments on your blog also counts as new content, adding to the perception that your blog/website is important.
How is SEO done and why are these SEO techniques so expensive?
The common belief when contemplating SEO strategy is to find a good SEO company to get you up in the rankings. However many businesses are shocked to hear the price and fail to understand the work behind the scenes that is being done.
There are many people and companies that make outstanding claims to get you rankings. There are many ways to trick Google into quick rankings using “blackhat” techniques and other seedy ways, that can lead to your website getting banned from Google. A good SEO company that adheres to Google’s guidelines and delivers true results will tell you up front, that true results will take months.
If you want to catch up to your competitors who have been practicing SEO long before you, and have established thousands if not hundreds of thousands of backlinks and have a presence all over the web, is it realistic to expect to catch up to them in a month?
The truth is, engaging in SEO is an extremely time consuming practice where hours are spent each day for months implementing the necessary SEO strategy, and techniques to build backlinks and promote your website throughout the web. Someone is actually working on doing this on a daily basis. It is not an automated system where backlinks are made out of thin air! So in hindsight the price of SEO is cheap. To put it into perspective, imagine how much it would cost you to hire an employee to do SEO everyday for a year.
In conclusion, the internet is all about linking, and Google follows those links. The more links going to your website, the better for you. Getting into the search engine marketing game now, is key to claiming a favorable position on search engines. The longer you wait, the more competitive the game will become, at a greater expense to you and more work for your SEO people. Internet usage is exploding in growth worldwide. Start thinking about your SEO strategy and technique now and plan for the future.
